"SUPERCOP"
new Jackie Chan movie premeire reviewed
7/24/96 New York City
The new movie "Supercop" opens Friday in theatres everywhere, but New Yorkers were given a special treat this Wednesday night as movie stars Jackie Chan, Michelle Khan and Stanley Tong, the Director, appeared for short publicity speeches. Fans, media and "beautiful people" crowded the Sony Astor Plaza to see if Jackie can top his last action film "Rumble in the Bronx". Even box office rival Steven Segal showed up to pay his respects, stylishly late after Jackie and all spoke. His conspicuous entrance was greeted by a friendly round of boos and calls of "Where's your ticket?".
Not a cop movie, the story begins with Jackie's Hong Kong "supercop" record being recognised as a needed asset for the PRC government and the DEA. Afraid of getting bored, he jumps at the opportunity to help Interpol retrieve money from the drug lords of the Golden Triangle. In a training camp, Jackie Chan demonstrates his martial arts skills supplemented by great audio effects. The first brawl scene features Asia's most popular actress Michelle Khan's scorpion style kicks and lots of Tazer (stun gun) action.
Sadly, bombs car/helicopter/train chases dominate the rest of the plot. The jokes aren't as corny as Rumble, but Jackie is always good for a few laughs as he gets out of the way of big trouble from the good guys, the bad guys, himself and all of the beautiful women.
